Sox Spin: DeGrom, Snell Win Cy Young Awards

Blake Snell won the AL Cy Young award on Wednesday, finishing with a 1.89 ERA, 0.974 WHIP and accumulating a 7.5 WAR during the 2018 campaign.

  • Snell was drafted out of high school in 2011 (52nd overall)
  • Despite being considered a top 20 prospect, Snell never truly dominated in the minors and last season and walked a dreadful four batters per nine innings pitched through 24 starts with the Rays in 2017
  • That year the Sox drafted Keenyn Walker 😦 with their first pick (47th overall)

Jacob deGrom won the NL Cy Young, turning in a 1.70 ERA, 0.912 WHIP and a 10.0 WAR.

  • deGrom was drafted in the 9th round (272nd overall) out of Stetson University. Shout out to the Hatters, who made it to the Super Regionals in this year’s College World Series
  • He was actually more of a hitter in college and didn’t pitch until the year he came out for the draft, compiling a 4.40 ERA through 12 starts
  • The Mets selected seven players before deGrom, including Matt Harvey with the 7th overall pick
  • The Sox drafted Chris Sale 13th overall that year and also selected Jake Petricka (63rd overall), Addison Reed (95th overall) and Tyler Saladino (218th overall)
